Dimetrodon.
Synapsid, meaning it was more closely related to mammals than reptiles. It lived during the Permian epoch. Its sail is regarded as being for thermoregulation, enabling it to get warmer faster, and so catch food earlier in the day than other predators may have been able to. This thermoregulation would have led to mammals being ‘warm-blooded’.
